Could Your Halloween Party BE More 90s?! How To Throw An Epic Party Like It’s (The) 1990s

Given the 90s is trending left, right, and centre, a 90s themed Halloween party has to be the ultimate cool way to celebrate this year.

It works for those old enough to remember the decade the first time around and those loving a 90s retro vibe.

With 90s TV show Friends just as popular as it was back in the day, Clueless being a rite of passage for teen girls, and UK mega-90s band Oasis recently announcing a world tour after famously splitting up 15 years ago, the 90s is going to be the most on-trend decade for months to come.

The Guide To Partying AS IF It Was The 90s

The brilliant thing is, it’s relatively easy to put together a 90s themed spooky party, so if you fancy throwing your Halloween back to the 90s, here’s a quick rundown of how to go about it.

1. Step Back In Time By Screening A 90s Halloween Movie

There were some epic Halloween movies that came out in the 90s, think Hocus Pocus, The Nightmare Before Christmas, and The Addams Family.

Stream them or go old school, and find an old VHS video player and make it like you rented your video from Blockbuster!

2. Dress Up As Anything From A Power Ranger To A Gallagher Brother

There are so many directions to take when it comes to 90s fancy dress. You could go down the 90s cartoon characters route—Power Rangers, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles come to mind.

Or you could choose from an array of iconic music stars of the 90s, from the Gallagher brothers in bucket hats and Stone Island, to Britney Spears’ notorious Hit Me Baby One More Time outfit.

Then there’s characters from 90s films, Imma thinking Pulp Fiction, Clueless, Wayne's World or The Big Lebowski are three great 90s films to draw inspiration from.

Or you could just go for classic 90s gear like scrunchies, neon colour pops, and a bumbag/fanny pack for good measure.

3. Chow Down on Retro 90s Candy & Slurp 90s Drinks

Candy is always at the centre of Halloween, so make like a nostalgia candy addict and break out some 90s classics:

  • Warheads
  • Pixy Stix
  • Airheads
  • Bubble Tape
  • Push Pops
  • Jawbreakers

And don’t forget to stock up on Sunny D and Capri Sun for some (slightly dubious) mocktail and cocktail making!

4. Get Your 90s Games On!

Now there are two routes to go with games for your party. You can either step back in time with classics like Twister or even some retro 90s video games (Mario Kart).

Or you could grab a bundle of 90s printable games, like this set of 90s Music Bingo, to keep everyone entertained.

5. Take Tons of Pictures—With a Vintage Digital Camera

While Polaroid cameras are synonymous with the 80s, they were shoved aside by compact digital cameras in the 90s, like the Canon PowerShot.

You can now pick up a PowerShot super cheaply, so why not capture the fun and frolics at the party by shooting digital?

6. Bug Out To The Ultimate '90s Playlist

Where do you even begin with a 90s Halloween playlist?! Well, maybe start with rave, add in some grunge, move through some 90s boybands from the UK and US.

Then mix in some Oasis and Britpop, a splash of Spice Girls, a dash of Alanis Morissette, Britney and Christina Aguilera and maybe end up in Gangsta’s Paradise with Coolio.

OR search Spotify for one of many done-for-you playlists, like this Very 90s Halloween Playlist.

7. Do Everyone A 90s (Party) Favour

The retro-ness doesn’t have to end when your guest leave.

Send each guest out of the door with a retro party favour, how about...

  • A Halloween Happy Meal style toy
  • A copy of a vintage 90s comic
  • Hair scrunchies
  • Slap bracelets
